Japan Veterinary Ophthalmic Conference
From the President
Unfortunately, it cannot be said that opportunities to receive an veterinary ophthalmic examination are enough in Japan. Now with a little spread of specialists, the cover by the general veterinarians are still necessary. the Japan Veterinary Ophthalmic Conference (JVOC) organized it in order to improve this problem even a little. JVOC became a corporation in 2010 and accomplishes further development.
As a part of our educational efforts, we launched a lecture series in basic ophthalmology in 2009, primarily in eastern Japan. For this lecture series, we published a textbook based on the 5th edition of Veterinary Ophthalmology by Gelatt, the bible in our field, to disseminate a series of universally accepted professional standards. Specific knowledge that should be acquired by practitioners has been selected from the vast amount of information contained in the book and arranged into a curriculum consisting of 13 lectures completed in 16 hours. Our lecturers are motivated veterinarians who are prominent in both research and clinical practice in ophthalmology, and their enthusiastic lectures have been well received to date. To advance information disclosure, we periodically report data from JVOC Executive Committee members’ practice in reports such as number of visits, new cases and breeds, causes, surgeries and acuity preservation rates for cataracts and other specific diseases, etc.) at our annual meetings, where we also provide premier information on the latest ophthalmological topics to inspire the interest of general practitioners. This program provides an excellent opportunity for colleagues and friends in the field to exchange information and interact socially. The Japan Veterinary Ophthalmic Surgery Society, another JVOC initiative, hosts review meetings on a regular basis to share information about the fundamentals of ophthalmic surgery and to improve eye care standards for veterinary patients. If you have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants. The JVOC provides a better ophthalmic care system for companion animals –man’s best friends. We will promote future insights into the Animal eye diseases.
